Coombe Farm

The Surrounding Area

The Fields

The surrounding fields are part of the farm and are let to the local farmer. There are usually young cattle and sheep grazing in the surrounding fields and crops to feed the animals in the winter.

There are two small woods and a stream marks the eastern border of the fields. The East Devon Way footpath crosses the stream and emerges from the line of trees in the big field to the east of the farmhouse and runs up the field to meet Coombe Lane directly outside the house.

You are welcome to wander around the fields and over to the Marl pit. Please keep your dog on a lead if there are animals in the field.

The Marl Pit

The ‘Marl Pit' is in the furthest field from the farm, and is full of water and completely fenced off. There small island towards one end and a wooden jetty. It is a great place for a family picnic, but young children need to be watched. The water is deep so it's a great place go fishing for the many roach.

Walks in the area

The East Devon Way crosses the field near to the farmhouse and continues for many miles in both directions to the coast.

Nearby there are many footpaths in the area which will take you through beautiful countryside. The dramatic paths across the edges of the cliffs link the small coastal towns and villages and provide magnificent views.

Meat and Groceries There is a large Tescos in Honiton which is open 24 hours. Recently, they have introduced a very efficient on-line shopping service. You can order in advance from home and everything will be delivered to the farm ready for when you arrive. It works very well. Tesco.com

Our cousins own and run the award winning farm shop, Wallaces of Hemyock. They will deliver quality beef, bison, venison, chicken, pork and lamb direct to the farm. They also supply ready prepared meals, fantastic casseroles pies and cheeses. If you want to visit the farm shop, it is about 20 minutes away. There is also a restaurant. The phone number is 01823 680 307

Pubs There are many excellent friendly pubs serving local ales (Otter Ale) within 5 or 6 miles but sadly not one actually in the village of Northleigh . Some of them are gastro-pubs and provide both lunch and dinner. Honiton has several pubs. The newly opened 'Holt' is in Honiton high street is owned by the Otter brewery. It is very comfortable and serves bar food downstairs and has a full restaurant upstairs. There are lots of excellent pubs are a few minutes drive away to the coast or inland.

Restaurants The splendid Elizabethan, Combe House Hotel in the nearby time warp village of Gittisham has a well known restaurant. However some of the best food is found in the gastropubs in the area such as the Drew Arms at Broadhembury and the Barrel o' Beer at Beer. Further afield are the fish restaurant at West Bay and the top class restaurants in Exeter .

Riding and Stabling

The area has some lovely riding country. There is a very safe and organised riding school a few minutes away in the next valley which offers accompanied hacks and full tuition.

Shooting and Golf. There is an 18 hole golf course only 4 minutes away, and many other courses are within easy driving distance. In the winter there is plenty of challenging shooting in the steep valleys nearby. Exmoor is only 45 minutes away.

The Sea and coastline. Northleigh is 5 miles from the sea at Lyme Bay . The coastline in his area has been designated a world Heritage site and is known as the Jurassic Coast due to the huge number of fossils found on the beaches at Charmouth and Lyme Regis.

The nearest place is the idyllic fishing village of Beer where you can take out a mackerel boat from the shingle beach following a good English fry up breakfast at one of the two beach bars. There are delightful pubs in Beer and Branscombe which serve local ales and excellent food

If you go down the coast to the west you will find the extensive sandy beaches of Exmouth
